Denis & Patricia’s 70th Wedding Vow Renewal at St Peter’s Church, Ashton-under-Lyne

Dennis and Patricia’s day was not a wedding in the usual sense. It was something rarer, a celebration of seventy years of marriage, renewed in the very place where it all began.
When their granddaughter Laura first told me they would be returning to St Peter’s Church in Ashton-under-Lyne to renew their vows, I felt genuinely moved. The same church. The same doors. The same promise, seventy years later.
A Return to St Peter’s Church
Their vow renewal took place during a Sunday service at St Peter’s Church in the heart of Tameside. As a wedding photographer specialising in church weddings, I’ve had the privilege of capturing many meaningful ceremonies in similar settings, and this one felt especially touching.
Family and friends gathered outside beforehand, enjoying the warm sunshine and quietly anticipating the moment Dennis and Patricia would walk in once again as bride and groom.
During the sunday church service, they made their way forward with their two flower girls, their expressions full of joy. The Vicar, Revd Dr Paul Monk, spoke about their life together before guiding them as they renewed their vows and exchanged new rings.
There was something deeply steady about the moment. Not dramatic or showy, simply faithful. A promise first made decades ago, spoken again with the same sincerity.
Familiar Faces and Meaningful Details
One of the loveliest parts of the day was seeing some of Patricia’s original bridesmaids and her Maid of Honour present once more. Each wore a sash reading “Original Bridesmaid,” which brought smiles to everyone watching.
After the service, we recreated photographs by the same church doors Dennis and Patricia had used on their wedding day all those years ago. Standing them in that same spot felt quietly powerful, a beautiful link between past and present.
Family Photographs to Mark the Occasion
Outside the church in Ashton-under-Lyne, we gathered everyone together for family photographs. Their son, grandchildren and great-grandchildren stood proudly beside them, a visible reminder of the life they have built together.
Group photographs like these matter. They freeze a moment in time for a family that continues to grow. Seventy years of marriage is not just a milestone for two people; it shapes generations.
As always, I made sure we captured each family grouping carefully so they would have photographs to look back on and share for years to come.
Time Together
Before leaving the church grounds, I spent a little time with Dennis and Patricia on their own.
We kept it simple just the two of them, side by side. One of my favourite photographs from the day shows them holding a framed image from their original wedding. The contrast between the young couple in the frame and the couple standing before me was striking, yet the warmth between them was unchanged.
Those quieter portraits often become the most meaningful.
Celebrating at Woodhouse Gardens
The celebration continued at Woodhouse Gardens in Oldham, where their family had decorated a gazebo with photographs spanning their seventy years together.
Guests shared stories, laughter drifted across the decking area, and memories were gently retold. One that stood out was from Dennis’s time serving in the Middle East. Patricia had arranged for “We’ll Be Together Again” by Frank Sinatra to be played on the military radio, a small but powerful reminder of home during their time apart.
As the afternoon continued, we captured more formal group photographs in the sunshine, moments I know their family will treasure.
A Privilege to Photograph Such a Milestone
As a wedding photographer, I am often invited into significant moments in people’s lives. Dennis and Patricia’s 70th wedding anniversary renewal at St Peter’s Church in Ashton-under-Lyne was one I will not forget.
It was a day centred on faith, commitment and family, not in grand gestures, but in quiet faithfulness.
