Paul and Sarah’s Wedding at The Old School Rooms, Rochdale
A Beautiful, Classic Summer Wedding Day in Middleton, Rochdale
By Rebekah Morecroft, The Old School Rooms wedding photographer specialising in classic, natural wedding photography across Greater Manchester.
There is something wonderful about a summer wedding, the long light evenings and the easy laughter that comes with a June celebration. Paul and Sarah’s wedding at The Old School Rooms in Middleton, Rochdale, fell right in the middle of the June heatwave, and it was a lovely but very hot day. Sarah had thought ahead, buying fans for her guests to help everyone keep cool, and Paul, Sarah, and their guests coped wonderfully well with the heat throughout.
I had already gotten to know Paul and Sarah a little before their wedding day, having met them for their engagement shoot at Alexandra Park in Oldham. They told me on the day how glad they were that we had done the engagement shoot together, as it had helped them feel relaxed and prepared for their wedding.
Getting Ready at The Old School Rooms
I arrived at The Old School Rooms in Middleton and was greeted by the venue’s lovely owner, Tricia, before finding Sarah with her bridesmaids busily getting ready, her hair and makeup just being finished off. There was an excitement in the air. As The Old School Rooms wedding photographer for the day, I always enjoy taking a little time before the ceremony to properly take in a venue, and this one did not disappoint. So, while Sarah continued getting ready, I took the opportunity to look around and photograph both the ceremony room and the courtyard space, where we would be taking many of their wedding pictures.
I also used this time to capture Sarah’s dress, shoes, and accessories. As Sarah’s grandson was going to be their page boy, I photographed his little outfit too, along with a very cute sign that read, “Don’t Worry Granddad, Grandma is on her way. Don’t I look cute today!” Sarah had also told me about a photograph of Paul’s dad that would be placed on the front row, and I made sure to capture that special detail for them.
I loved simply capturing the excitement and enjoyment that Sarah and her bridesmaids shared as they got ready together. We took time for some photographs of all the bridesmaids in their beautiful deep blue dresses, as well as a few of Sarah alone, showing off her dress, beautifully framed by the window in the room where she was getting ready. I was also able to capture Sarah’s two sons and her grandson coming through to see her in her wedding dress for the first time, a genuinely special moment for them all.
From there I spent some time capturing the guests arriving, and once Paul had arrived I photographed some groom portraits with him in the lovely courtyard, including a lovely moment of his mum placing his buttonhole on his waistcoat. Paul had four groomsmen with him, his two brothers and Sarah’s two sons, along with Sarah’s grandson as page boy. All five wore smart cream suits, though with the heat as it was, only the waistcoats were worn, the jackets staying off for the day.
The Ceremony
The ceremony began with Paul’s two daughters walking down the aisle, followed by one of Sarah’s sons and his wife, and then Sarah’s best friend in a beautiful dark blue saree. Then came the moment, as cute as could be, Sarah’s grandson walked down the aisle holding hands with his parents, Sarah’s son and daughter in law. It was such a sweet moment.
The ceremony itself was beautifully led, and sweetly, Paul and Sarah were asked to kiss more than once throughout, which only made the moment feel a little more special each time. Every part of it, the exchanging of vows, the giving of rings, the multiple kisses, and the walk back down the aisle as husband and wife, was beautifully done.
Courtyard Celebrations and Confetti
Paul, Sarah, and all their guests headed out into the courtyard to enjoy drinks in the lovely sunshine. This was followed by a whole wedding guest photograph on the steps of the courtyard, with the building behind them, before everyone lined up for confetti. Paul and Sarah walked down the middle of the courtyard as they were covered in confetti, sharing lots of smiles, kisses, and laughter along the way, a lovely moment for them to enjoy together.
The courtyard at The Old School Rooms is surrounded by beautiful building on all sides, and we found a quiet space away from the other guests to take a few more photographs with their closest family, friends, and wedding party.
The Reception Room Transformation
As guests began to make their way into what was now the reception room, transformed from the ceremony room, I took the opportunity to give Paul and Sarah a little time with their guests. I photographed the room in its new form, taking shots from above as well as detail shots of the beautiful centrepieces and the room as a whole. I also captured guests simply enjoying themselves, mingling.
Couples Portraits at The Old School Rooms
Unexpectedly, it began to rain, and everyone hoped it might cool things down from the heat, but instead it only added to the humidity, making everything feel hotter than before. Guests headed inside as a result, but once the rain began to ease, I was able to steal Paul and Sarah away for their couple portraits, and the grounds and courtyard of The Old School Rooms made those photographs even more beautiful.
Speeches, Cake, and a Barbecue Reception
Once their couple portraits were finished, Paul and Sarah were welcomed into their reception with guests cheering as they were introduced as Mr and Mrs. They headed over to cut their cake, using a small sword, a personal touch that was lovely to see. For their reception, Paul and Sarah had chosen a barbecue, served beautifully by the venue. One guest even brought Paul a large steak, which the venue happily cooked for him on the grill.
Once guests had eaten, Paul gave a short and heartfelt speech, with Sarah by his side throughout.
Dancing Into the Evening
Their first dance followed, with guests watching patiently before being invited to join them on the dance floor, which quickly filled with dancing and laughter. For the rest of the night, guests enjoyed themselves despite the heat, dancing or catching up with friends and family, both inside and outside in the courtyard.
Golden Hour Portraits
As my time with them was coming to a close, and as we had planned before the wedding, I took Paul and Sarah back outside for a final set of couple portraits during golden hour. We had hoped for a beautiful sunset to make the images extra special, and although the sky had other ideas, we still captured some genuinely beautiful photographs in the soft evening light. These remain some of my favourite images from the whole day.
“Rebekah was so easy to work with put us so at ease for all the photos it made a difference having the engagement photos as well (would recommend these). The service she provided was faultless and on the day she worked tirelessly to provide us with the best selection of photos possible.
Thank you“
