A Beautiful, Classic Winter Wedding Day in Widnes, Cheshire

There is something lovely about a winter wedding. The crisp air, the low golden light, and the warmth of a beautifully decorated reception room at the end of the day. Everglades Hotel in Widnes is a lovely venue for a wedding. The reception room is beautifully decorated and creates a wonderfully warm atmosphere, and the hotel grounds provide a natural and elegant setting for portraits. Emma and Kris’s winter wedding at Everglades Hotel in Widnes was a pleasure to photograph, and it was a wonderfully day from start to finish.
Their wedding took place on the 2nd of January, the first wedding of my new year, and what a lovely way to begin.
Waiting for Emma
When I arrived I introduced myself to Kris, who was chatting with guests near the bar. He was relaxed and clearly excited for the day ahead.
Before the ceremony I took Kris outside for some groom portraits in the hotel grounds. The winter sun was shining through the trees and creating natural sunbursts behind him, the kind of effect you can never plan for but always appreciate when it happens. I also loved capturing Kris checking his pocket watch as he waited for Emma to arrive.
Back inside I had the pleasure of meeting the videographers from Lewis Films, and we worked well together throughout the day. As Kris waited with his groomsmen, laughter filled the room between them and their guests.
The Ceremony at Everglades Hotel, Widnes
The ceremony at Everglades Hotel was warm and full of genuine joy from beginning to end.
Emma walked down the aisle with her brother, who had a lovely smile throughout. It was clear he was honoured to walk his sister to the man she was about to marry. Emma looked beautiful, and the moment Kris saw her his face said everything.
The ceremony was filled with warmth and even a few happy giggles, which made it feel personal and real. The string quartet played beautifully throughout, with three violinists and a cellist creating an elegant atmosphere in the ceremony room.
After exchanging their vows, Emma and Kris shared their first kiss and walked back down the aisle together as husband and wife.
Drinks Reception and Couple Portraits
After the ceremony, Emma and Kris greeted each of their guests as they made their way through to the drinks reception. While guests mingled and celebrated, I took the opportunity to bring Emma and Kris outside to the hotel grounds for their couple portraits by the bandstand.
Despite the January chill, they were completely at ease with each other and with the camera. Kris kept looking at Emma with a genuine and tender smile, the kind of look that needs no direction and no prompting, and those are always the most genuine moments to photograph.
The bandstand provided a lovely backdrop for their portraits, and the soft winter light added a beautiful warmth and depth to every image.
Family Portraits and the Wedding Party
After the couple portraits we gathered family and the wedding party together for the formal group photographs. By this point Emma had changed into her red bolero, which added a lovely pop of colour to the winter scene and the natural surroundings of the hotel grounds.
Emma and Kris’s families all joined us, along with the grooms men and the bridal party whose multicoloured dresses, one in red, one in green, and one in blue, added a joyful and colourful element to the group portraits.
These are always important photographs, the ones that will be printed, framed, and kept for years to come, and I always make sure they are given proper time and care.
The Wedding Breakfast and Speeches
The reception room at Everglades Hotel was beautifully decorated with twinkling lights that created a warm and cosy atmosphere as the winter sun set outside. Every detail reflected the care that had gone into planning the day.
After a lovely wedding breakfast, the speeches began. Emma’s brother spoke warmly about his sister and his words reflected how close the two of them are. The father of the groom’s speech had the room laughing, including a story involving Home Alone that nobody in that room will forget in a hurry. Each speech had touching words that showed just how kind and caring Emma and Kris are.
The First Dance and Evening Celebrations
As the evening began, Emma and Kris cut their wedding cake before sharing their first dance together. Emma then danced with her brother, and Kris with his sister, before the dance floor filled with guests ready to celebrate into the evening.
It was a warm and joyful end to a lovely winter wedding day at Everglades Hotel, Widnes.
